Why IGNORING AN AGING RETAINING WALL CAN SPELL DISASTER FOR YOU AND YOUR HOME.....
If you have noticed that your retaining wall is bowing, leaning, rotting or cracking please do NOT ignore it. It can often be difficult for the untrained eye to spot, but these issues can be symptomatic of a SERIOUS problem.
Unfortunately, amongst the hundreds of retaining walls we have replaced for consumers all over Brisbane, we’ve lost track of the number of times a compromised retaining wall has caused serious structural problems for people’s homes.
You see, your house’s retaining wall usually does more than just allow you to fill an area to create a level back yard…. It is often literally holding the foundations of your house in place.
When a retaining wall moves, bows or bends….. so does the soil surrounding your house, the land literally slides in the direction of the wall.
Rather than tell you what can happen, we can SHOW YOU. The picture below comes from one of our Customers in Brisbane’s Manly West. You can see the state of the retaining wall in the bottom picture that was causing the land to slide. Due to this landslide effect, the customer began noticing cracking in their brick work and gaps around their windows and doors (a result of the house moving).
While they thought nothing of it initially, it progressively deteriorated to the point where the gaps surrounding the house’s windows and doors were letting in vermin (bugs and rodents)…. and the cracking in the brick work became so large that you could fit your entire finger inside.

With the old, leaning, and deteriorating timber retaining wall replaced, the land sliding ceased and the house’s footings were re-secured. The durable concrete sleeper retaining wall installed by Afford A Wall and will now offer protection for 40+ years. Unfortunately, for this customer, the restorative work came too late and the retaining wall replacement cost came an added bill from a structural engineering firm to repair the damaged brick work and the houses slab / foundations (not a cheap exercise, trust us).
CONCRETE SLEEPERS DON’T ATTRACT TERMITES
The replacement concrete sleeper retaining wall also has the HUGE benefit of no longer being susceptible to attack from termites. Termite infestation is a common problem that we come across when replacing timber retaining walls – as they are near damp earth (and termites love dampness).
